ETHNOLOGICAL EXHIBITION
Folk art and everyday life in past centuries
The ethnological exhibition in the Cerklje Municipal Museum offers visitors insight into the life of our ancestors as it unfolded in Cerklje and the surrounding villages over the past two hundred years. The exhibition is not just a collection of objects, but an emotionally rich narrative about daily life, holidays, work, and artistic expression of people who lived in harmony with nature and their community.
Beauty in use
At the heart of the exhibition is folk art – a sense of aesthetic and functionality combined in everyday objects. You can admire richly painted chests from the 19th century by local artist Matevž Stare, hand-carved wooden bowls, grain measures, decorated chairs, and kitchen utensils such as “mentrge” and “nečke” for kneading dough.
Festivities, faith and work
The exhibition also reveals the deep connection of people with festive rhythms and faith. This is reflected in finely carved ceremonial kitchen tools used only on special occasions and in wall frescoes with religious motifs that adorned house facades.
A variety of farming tools – from rakes to wooden scales – illustrate a simple yet aesthetically refined way of life. Each item is both practical and a bearer of tradition and values.
Objects that speak
The objects on display are not only witnesses of material heritage – they also carry the spirit of the time. They speak of celebrations, hard work, knowledge, and creativity. They remind us that even the simplest items – when viewed with understanding – reveal deep respect for nature, community, and the past.

Beekeeping Association Cerklje
The villages beneath Mount Krvavec, which make up the Municipality of Cerklje, have a rich beekeeping tradition. Nearly every village has one or more apiaries, indicating that many residents still practice beekeeping as a hobby. Although individual beekeepers usually keep around fifteen hives, they are organized into an official association.
The Beekeeping Association Cerklje traces its roots back to January 1920, when local beekeepers founded a beekeeping branch based in Cerklje. The branch operated actively until the end of World War II, after which it was renamed the Cerklje Beekeeping Family. Long-time leader Franc Bobnar led the organization for 32 years. He was followed by Franc Frantar and then Franc Zorman. Since 2000, the association has been led by Franci Strupi.
The association is a member of the Slovenian Beekeepers’ Association and, since 2002, also of the Upper Gorenjska Beekeepers’ Association. It contributes to the publication of Kranjska čebela, the newsletter of the regional association. Today, the association includes 67 beekeepers managing around 900 bee colonies. Two members, Franci Strupi and Jože Brankovič, use the certified label Slovenski med – controlled quality for their honey.
Special attention is given to the education of young beekeepers. A beekeeping club is active at the Davorin Jenko Primary School Cerklje, with up to 15 pupils attending. Each year, the association organizes two expert lectures on beekeeping topics and a professional excursion for its members.
